Chapter Twelve

Monday morning of the May Bank Holiday dawned brightly over the sun-starved British Isles and their inhabitants. However, like millions of others, John had the mother of all hangovers. Madeleine was also battling with a headache (that last Cognac, no doubt) and Angus had had a terrible night with his back. Having slept poorly, all of them were up early.

Madeleine, being the least afflicted, offered to cook breakfast, but Angus would see no stranger presuming to take charge of his kitchen, and after much stoical huffing and puffing, he produced a mighty stack of pancakes with a bowl of sour cream and a tub of thawing raspberries.

They ate with relish, then Angus took to his bed while John and Madeleine scrubbed the kitchen. When the last dish had been put away, John shouted up the stairs. “We’re off for a stroll, Angus. Don’t forget your exercises. You know what the chiropractor said.”
